History
Yellow headlights, mandatory in France from 1936 to 1993, were used to improve road safety. They reduced glare, especially in rain or fog, and provided better visibility than white lights under these conditions. Also adopted to differentiate French vehicles during World War II, they were replaced by white headlights in 1993 when France aligned its standards with those of Europe.
